“My time spent excavating at Badia Pozzeveri was incredible. The instructors were extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited about the work we were doing. The site is beautiful and full of history. Students were given the opportunity to explore the many aspects of bioarchaeology along with the chance to learn about current and past projects of very well respected researchers. I would recommend this field school to anyone interested in gaining valuable experience excavating and processing a bioarchaeological site. I learned more over four weeks in the field than I could have imagined, due to the hard work of my peers and guidance of the amazing instructors. This was hands down one of the best experiences of my academic career!”
David H. – Ohio State University

"The Field School at Badia Pozzeveri was a great experience! There was a lot of hands-on work, such as troweling, total station, and GIS. We had great lectures from Dr. Fornaciari and Dr. Larsen. We also were provided with great accommodations and food, and it was a great area for exploring Italy. I learned a lot, and I'm really glad to have taken part in this project."
Carrie L. – University of Montana

"Whether you are a graduate student or an undergraduate, the fieldschool in Pozzeveri is a great experience. Being a graduate student myself, having already had the experience with working with skeletal remains in my lab; being in the field and learning the archaeological part of the excavation itself was a profound experience. It has made me more confident in my work in the lab, and more confident in my studies. I would recommend this field school to anyone that is passionate about pursuing the field of archaeology or bioarchaeology".
Olof O. – Indiana University

As a participant in the 2011 Field School, I expanded my understanding of archaeological field methods while building concrete relationships with other individuals who were just as enthusiastic as myself to be in Italy excavating. This school is a chance to learn hands-on while interacting with a range of individuals from different universities providing a diverse pool of knowledge. I encourage any aspiring archaeologist to partake in this school…you will dig it! Gianna F. – Sonoma State University

“The month I spent at the Badia Pozzeveri Field School was a month I’ll never forget and would love to repeat. I learned so much about so many different things: archaeological methods, burial excavation, skeleton removal, stratigraphical excavation, and GPS technology, just to name a few. We worked hard five days a week with a staff of Americans and Italians that were very knowledgeable, patient, and helpful. The food was great, the town was charming, and the townspeople were fabulous – they were really appreciative that we were there and bringing prestige to their small community. I would highly recommend this school to anyone who has a passion for archaeology or bioarchaeology, and who can appreciate the culture and beauty that is offered by Italy, its citizens, and its countryside.”
Mary Beth G. – Sonoma State University

“The field school at Badia Pozzeveri was an incredible experience. This opportunity provided me with experiences that have not only strengthened me as a student, but also as a contender in the future job market. With the help of my awesome instructors, I gained the hands-on training necessary for understanding medieval Italian culture through the excavation and analysis of human skeletal remains and material artifacts. I also learned how to map geospatial features with GIS and Total Station technology, which I have found to be quite beneficial to my current job search. Aside from the fieldwork, I had an amazing time on my weekend travels and was able to visit Cinque Terre, Lucca, Pisa, and Florence. I wouldn’t trade my experience there for anything and I hope to return very soon!”

“For anyone who has taken a university osteology class and wishes to expand their knowledge, I send this message to you: there is no better way to learn about bioarchaeology and archaeological excavation than at Field School Pozzeveri. FSP has a place for everyone; I knew nothing about bioarchaeology and had never taken an osteology course. Between them, my fellow Area 2000 colleagues had a range of knowledge and skills that allowed us to work well together, and to learn from each other. The instructors of Area 2000 had the patience of saints and a seemingly inexhaustible resource of knowledge in archaeological stratigraphy, pottery and material culture, human osteology, and GIS in archaeology. Between lectures, lab work, and excavation my initial identification of the "doohickey divot" evolved into proper labeling and identification (the bone I was trying to identify was actually the Coronoid Fossa). Although we had week-ends free, at FSP one will send a great deal of time with the instructors; we live together, work together, and eat together. Without exception, every instructor endeavoured to provide us with the best possible education and experience while in Italy. This particular group of instructors made the lectures interesting and life on the dig a hell of a lot of fun!”
Kerri P-N. – Athabasca University

“The field school at Badia Pozzeveri was the experience of a lifetime. Well organized excavations and a great setting made my time here one I will never forget. As a student, the professional yet lighthearted team was a dream come true. Anyone interested in Archaeology should put in the effort to be part of this program. It was completely worth it!”

“The time I spent at Badia Pozzeveri is probably going to be one of the best in my life. I got to work on amazing archaeology at one of the most amazing sites I have ever worked at. All the instructors were amazing and helpful, and I got to meet a lot of different people from North America and Italia. The work can be hard, but is very rewarding and will contribute to the experience of a lifetime.”
Kent A. – Mississippi State University

“This was a great first excavation experience to be thrown in, trowel in hand, and learn the importance of your area and to see its effect on the community was fantastic. I would recommend this field school to anyone who wants to see the impact of their work.”
Walker B. – University of Alaska, Anchorage

“I have learned how to be a better anthropologist in the field and have met people that I can remain friends with well after the field school ends. I have grown as a person from living abroad and recommend this field school to anyone who wants to be an anthropologist.”
Veronica B. – Ohio State University

“The excavation work, location, and staff were all great. I learned a lot about stratigraphy, and the digging was more fun than I had expected. I also enjoyed how much we interacted with the Badia Pozzeveri community!”
Shannon E. – Auburn University

“I really had an amazing time at this field school. I was fortunate to get hands-on work digging up and even analyzing archaeological skeletons! I felt like all of the instructors were very passionate about what they were doing, which encouraged us with our won work. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone with an interest in archaeology. Beyond the program itself, Altopascio was a great town to work in and it was an amazing experience to travel around Italy on the weekends.”
Amanda L – Drew University

“Badia Pozzeveri has really shown me what it takes to do real time bioarchaeology outside of the classroom”.
Adam Z – Ithaca College

“Archaeology in Tuscany? Who could ask for more?! The field school at Badia Pozzeveri was the perfect choice for my first archaeology field school experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who has the desire to really experience hands-on archaeology for the first time.”
Alex W. – University of California, Berkeley

“Attending the Field School Badia Pozzeveri was the trip of a lifetime, it not only prepared me for future field work but also gave the opportunity to experience one of the most beautiful provinces in Italy. The instructors were great, providing much insight into the world of bioarchaeology. We learned to properly excavate, clean and document burials and along with important systems like GIS we learned how to create site maps. I would recommend this field school to anyone interested in bioarch, the connections you make and the information you learn will not only help the undergraduate but can help propel your future. This field school is an unmatched opportunity in the career of an anthropologist.”
